Kon’nichiwa – welcome to Japan!
On arrival we will be met by our local, English Speaking, Tour Guide who will accompany the group to the awaiting vehicle and transfer us to our hotel. We will drop off our bags and then be taken out for some sightseeing. The port city of Osaka is Japan’s second largest metropolitan centre after Tokyo and has been the economic powerhouse of the Kansai Region for many centuries. We will visit Osaka castle, built in 1583 as the intended capital of Japan before the capital was moved to Edo (now known as Tokyo), it is now a symbol of Osaka. We then make our way to Takimi Koji Gourmet Street for lunch. Our guide will be on hand to assist on where to get a bite to eat. At an agreed time we venture into Umeda Sky Building and go up to the observatory, while enjoying the breathtaking sights, you can also directly feel the wind―which at 170 meters off the ground can get quite strong. Here, not only will you see all of Osaka but also you can see as far away as Awaji Island. Day 3
Kobe (B,D)
After breakfast this morning we will journey around 1 hour by coach to Kobe. Our first stop in Kobe is the Hakutsuru Sake Brewery, one of the best Sake Breweries in Kobe. Witness the processing of Sake brewing through the informative exhibits and sample the tasty Sake, before choosing some of our own to take home as a souvenir. Then we make our way to the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge the world’s longest suspension bridge. Opened in 1998, it spans the Akashi Strait between Kobe and Awaji Island and is part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, one of three expressways which connect Honshu with Shikoku. We return to the hotel with time to freshen up before we meet for this evening’s dinner.
Day 4
Nara (B,D)
This morning after breakfast we will make our way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nara with our private guide. For 74 years during the 8th century, Nara was Japan’s first capital, and became the centre of power. Start off your adventure with a wander through Nara Park. One of the oldest parks in Japan, over a thousand tamed yet wild deer freely roam its grounds. Considered in Shintoism to be sacred messengers of the gods, the deer are still protected as national treasures and they call this park home. Stroll through “deer park” as the locals call it, as you take in the quaint yet ancient charm of the grounds. Next, it’s off to the historic area at the jaw-dropping Todaiji Temple, the world’s largest wooden building. Enter the enormous wooden gateway, towering over 25 meters high and fashioned from 800 year old trees, passing the guardian king statues of the temple. Take in the stunning complex grounds, as you gaze upon this impressive structure. Next, head inside to see the world’s largest bronze Buddha statue enveloped in a golden halo. Now, before returning to Osaka, it’s off to Nara’s most celebrated shrine, the bright and beautiful Kasuga Taisha. This grand Shinto shrine was established in 768 AD, when four deities were invited to live here. Kasuga Taisha is not only ancient, but architecturally stunning with bright vermillion buildings and halls surrounded by Nara’s beautiful woods. Be sure to walk through the hallways which house hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns donated by worshipers over the centuries. Back at our hotel, there is some time at leisure. This evening we come together and go out to a local restaurant for dinner.
Day 5
Osaka – Hiroshima (B,D)
NOTE: This morning, your luggage will be transported separately from Osaka to Kyoto. Please arrange a small bag for 2 nights in Hiroshima.
Following breakfast, we check out and are transferred to Shin Osaka Station where we board the Shinkansen, or better known as a Bullet Train! Upon arrival at the Hiroshima Station, we will be transferred by private coach to the famous Peace Memorial Park and Museum, please be aware that the museum may be confronting and upsetting for some and it is at your discretion if you wish to visit or enjoy time at leisure exploring the Peace Memorial Park. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945. Through the efforts of many people, including those of the city of Hiroshima, it has been preserved in the same state as immediately after the bombing. Not only is it a stark and powerful symbol of the most destructive force ever created by humankind; it also expresses the hope for world peace and the ultimate elimination of all nuclear weapons. We will then make our way to our hotel to check in and freshen up before we enjoy Okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury Pancake) – a local specialty for dinner.
