South Africa
Arguably one of the most diverse nations, South Africa is affectionately called the “Rainbow nation”. It has 11 languages and racial influences from Africa, Asia and Europe. Cape Town offers a variety of activities including beaches, restaurants, and the nightlife. Due to its history there are several historical attractions including the Zululand battlefields of Kwazulu-Natal, the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg and Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town. South Africa’s main attraction is its untamed wilderness with its vast wildlife roaming freely across the national parks including Kruger National Park. |
Time Zone
SAST (South African Standard Time) is six hours behind Perth (12pm SA time will be 6pm in Perth), seven and a half hours behind Adelaide and Darwin (12pm SA time will be 7:30pm in Adelaide & Darwin) and eight hours behind Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne & Sydney (12pm SA time will be 8pm in these cities).
Weather
Bring cool clothes and sunscreen in summer as temperatures reach 30-40 degrees. It can rain during the summer so you may need an umbrella. In winter the weather is milder so bring a light jacket or jersey.
Banking and Currency
The currency is the Rand which like many other currencies is divided into 100 cents. There are R200, R100, R50, R20 and R10 notes.
Bank opening hours: 9am until 3:30pm Monday to Friday and 8:30am until 11am on Saturdays. Banks are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Most banks have ATMs and foreign exchange services with cash, travellers cheques and credit cards. You can also obtain cash from ATMS. Always advise your bank that you are travelling as they may block your card if you don’t.

It is recommended that you wear practical shoes if you will be doing a lot of walking.
