The city has evolved to include beautiful gardens, art galleries and restaurants which showcase the best of Tasmanian produce. Enroute to our hotel we travel to nearby Rosny Lookout for panoramic views of Hobart set against the majestic backdrop of the Wellington Range. Then it’s across the Tasman Bridge to Hobart City and a short tour of historic Battery Point, Salamanca Place and the vibrant waterfront before checking into our accommodation. A Welcome Dinner will be take place this evening within the hotel.

Wellington – weather permitting) for panoramic views of the city and estuary before crossing the Derwent to the historic village of Richmond. Here we may view the spire of Australia’s oldest Catholic Church from beneath the arch of Australia’s oldest stone bridge still in use. We’ll wander the streets of this delightful Georgian town and discover the arts and crafts, bakeries and tea rooms. Before returning to our accommodation, we can enjoy some quiet moments in Hobart’s Royal Botanical Gardens, vibrant with spring colours and blooms. The remainder of the afternoon and evening is at leisure. Your Tour Host will on hand for anyone that would like company.

This morning after breakfast we travel via Sorell Causeway and Midway Point for our full day tour to Tasman Peninsula. Take in magnificent views from the look-out above picturesque Eaglehawk Neck and Pirates Bay before continuing to the Port Arthur Convict Settlement. Within the 40 hectares of landscaped grounds lies a rich history of Australia’s convict past. Included in the entry is a guided walking tour, a short Harbour Cruise, access to the Visitor Centre and Interpretation Gallery as well as more than 30 buildings, ruins and restored gardens and houses. Explore as you wish before departing the historic site to tour beside Norfolk and Frederick Henry Bays back to Hobart. We return to our accommodation with time to refresh before going out to a local restaurant for this evenings dinner.
Day 4
Hobart – Strahan (B-D)
Departing Hobart this morning following breakfast, we tour the picturesque Derwent Valley through New Norfolk to climb the Central Plateau. Follow the Wild Way passing trout lakes, mountains, gorges and the Wild Rivers National Park, passing through Tarraleah Gorge, the site of early hydro-electric installations. We take a tour of “The Wall in the Wilderness”, a fascinating masterpiece carved in Tasmanian Huon Pine which tells the story of the region’s rich history. Our lunch break (own expense) will be at Derwent Bridge and followed by a short walk into the delightful Nelson Falls. We then cross Lake Burbury and descend through the ghost towns of Linda and Gormanston and on to the copper mining town of Queenstown. After a short tour, we continue our journey to Strahan, situated on the magnificent Macquarie Harbour. Discover the village and wharf area where one of the few remaining Huon pine sawmills still processes logs felled in the rainforests of western Tasmania and has its history with the ‘piners’ who gathered this beautiful timber, much prized for boat building. We check into our accommodation and come together for dinner.
Accommodation: Strahan Village– 4 star – or similar (3 nights)
Day 5
Strahan (B-L-D)
Enjoy an early breakfast today before we embark on a cruise of the incomparable Gordon River into the heart of Tasmania’s wilderness and the edge of World Heritage. Cross vast Macquarie Harbour past Sarah Island, the worst convict settlement of all, to follow the Gordon through stands of ancient Huon pine, sassafras and myrtle rainforest to step ashore for a wilderness board-walk at Heritage Landing. We voyage to Hell’s Gates, the aptly named harbour entrance where many early ships were destroyed by ferocious ocean swells. On return to Strahan there will be time to explore the village including the visitor centre and Huon pine saw mill before we return to our accommodation. After time to freshen up we meet for dinner. Then, this evening, enjoy the unique play titled “The Ship That Never Was.” This is a live professional theatre production, performing in Strahan since January 1994, written by Richard Davey and produced by The Round Earth Company. The play tells the dramatic and hilarious true story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island! Be engaged (and possibly involved) as you watch this wonderful play.
Day 6
Strahan (B-L-D)
This morning after breakfast, step onboard the West Coast Wilderness Railway’s heritage diesel train at Regatta Point Station in Strahan and head deep into the rainforest, while onboard guides share stories of those that built the railway and called it their home. We journey over the Iron Bridge at Teepookana, once a thriving port town, before disembarking at Lower Landing Station on the King River. Enjoy a short, guided nature walk and taste honey, with its origins from local endemic species, before heading back to Strahan. Upon returning to Strahan this afternoon we have time at leisure before coming together for dinner.
Day 7
Strahan – Devonport (B-L-D)
Departing from Strahan after breakfast, our journey takes us through the rugged west coast, steeped in mining history. As we travel past Tullah, nestled by the serene Lake Rosebery, we continue northward. The route leads through lush rainforests, mineral-rich mountains, and the picturesque Vale of Belvoir. Crossing alpine cattle country, we arrive at the iconic Cradle Mountain National Park. Explore the park with a guided bus tour to Dove Lake, nestled at the foot of the majestic Cradle Mountain. We’ll also visit Waldheim, the forest home of pioneer Gustav Weindorfer. Afterwards, recharge with a delightful meal at the charming Cradle Mountain Hotel. There will also be time to immerse yourself in Tasmania’s culture at the Wilderness Gallery. Learn about the first nation’s people, geography, flora, fauna, and early explorers. With eight exhibition spaces and a fantastic gift shop, there’s something for everyone. Next, step into the wild heart of Tasmania at Devils@Cradle, a world-class conservation sanctuary. This vital refuge is dedicated to the protection and survival of some of the island’s most enigmatic and endangered native species. On this fascinating tour, meet the mysterious Tasmanian devil, a creature both feared and misunderstood, and learn how conservationists here are working tirelessly to ensure its future. We will now wind our way to the town of Sheffield to admire the evocative out-door art gallery of impressive murals. Continue on through fertile agricultural land to Devonport and our hotel beside the Mersey River. Arriving at our accommodation we’ll check in and then come together for dinner.

Our visit includes Highfield Historic Site, the original headquarters of the Van Diemen’s Land Company and the birthplace of European settlement in Tasmania’s north‑west. Built largely by convict labour in the 1830s, the elegant homestead occupies a commanding position overlooking Stanley, the harbour, and Bass Strait. There will be some time to explore the beautifully preserved house, outbuildings, chapel, and gardens, while learning about early colonial life and the development of the Circular Head region. We then continue into Stanley itself, where there is free time to explore the charming streets and historic terraces. You may also choose to ride the chairlift to the summit of The Nut for spectacular coastal views (ride is optional and own expense).
