Day 2
Norfolk Island (B,D)
This morning enjoy breakfast before we are picked up for a Half Day Island Orientation Tour. The half day tour is a must-do Norfolk Island experience, introducing travellers to the island’s history and life as it is today. From the historic Kingston to famous convict buildings and beautiful beaches the tour offers plenty of opportunities for travellers to take some photos and be fully informed about this fascinating island. During our tour we will also enjoy time at the local craft markets. Later today we will be taken to Kingston, for the Convict Settlement Tour, an in depth tour of the historic Georgian settlement of Kingston. Early evening we will be transferred to Hilli Restaurant for dinner before being picked up for this evening’s tour. 1856 The Untold Story recounts the arrival of the Bounty Mutineers’ descendants from Pitcairn Island. The 8th of June saw 194 people arrive on Norfolk Island aboard the Morayshire. This consisted of 40 men, 47 women, 54 boys, and 53 girls. They arrived in cold, wet blustery conditions. Few had ever been to sea before; they were seasick, homesick and heartsick. The journey of 6,000 km/ 3,700 miles took five weeks. They arrived to a recently abandoned penal settlement set aside for the ‘worst of the worst’ it was full of ghosts and memories.
Day 3
Norfolk Island (B,L)
Today is a day that is precious to Norfolk Islander’s hearts as they celebrate their Anniversary Day, otherwise known as Bounty Day, and this year is the 170th anniversary! This morning we will be picked up to watch the Bounty Mutineer descendants as they re-enact the landing of their forebearers, dressed in period costume. The landing takes place at the Kingston Pier, the oldest pier in the Southern Hemisphere. You can also observe the tradition of the children of the Bounty Mutineers descendants rolling down the Government House hill. Then it’s off for morning tea followed by, perhaps the centrepiece of Bounty Day, a traditional Island lunch. Before lunch the Norfolk grace will be sung. We will enjoy some traditional Norfolk wetls (food) with complimentary champagne, orange juice, tea and coffee. The music kicks in as the festive part of the day begins. As the afternoon wears on sit back with a ‘baeli ful’ (full belly) or take a wander around the area. When we’re ready, we’ll return to our accommodation. This evening is at leisure and for those that want to join, can wander next door to the Bowling Club Bar & Bistro, one of Norfolk’s most popular places, for dinner (at own expense).
Day 4
Norfolk Island (B,D)
This morning following breakfast we have the Norfolk Today tour. We will learn how Norfolk Islanders live in the 21st Century and the essential services that make life on a tiny South Pacific island possible. How they bring petrol and gas onto the island; power their world; deal with waste; forecast the weather; keeps themselves informed and make a global contribution. This is a real behind the scenes experience, which shows the true workings on Norfolk Island. Returning to our accommodation we have the afternoon at leisure. This evening we have a Progressive Dinner to Island Homes. We get to enjoy a 3-course meal progressing to different Norfolk Island family homes throughout the evening. This is a fun night and a great way to meet the local people and sample some of the Island dishes.
Day 5
Norfolk Island (B,D)
An early start today sees us taking a leisurely Breakfast Bushwalk through the National Park. At the end of the walk, we meet on the clifftop for a delicious breakfast barbeque. Those that would prefer a sleep-in can be collected by the bus in time to meet for breakfast. We return to our accommodation mid-morning and have some free time. After lunch, (at own expense), we will be collected and taken on the new Women of Norfolk tour. We learn the captivating stories of Norfolk Island’s exceptional women who have played a pivotal role and helped shape its history. We trace the remarkable journeys of Olivia Gascoigne, who faced an imminent death sentence, Aunt Selina Buffet, a woman of enduring influence with an award bearing her name, Marie Bailey, a key figure in Norfolk Island’s tourism industry, and Colleen McCullough, celebrated for her literary accomplishments and fervent advocacy for Norfolk Island. Walk in the footsteps of these extraordinary women who have triumphed over adversity and significantly shaped our beloved Norfolk community. Early evening we will be transferred to Bounty Restaurant for dinner.
Day 6
Norfolk Island (B,L,D)
Following breakfast we are taken to Fitzy’s Lavender Farm for an informative talk on the journey to setting up Norfolk Islands first ever Lavender Farm. We’ll hear about the challenges of importing bare rooted plants into the island whilst enjoying an easy walk round the farm. Learn about the 15 different Lavender Varieties that have been planted and see their other commercial plantings of Sage, Rosemary, Rose Geranium, Sunflowers and vegetables that are grown on Fitzy’s Farm. Later on we are picked up and taken to an Island Cultural Lunch. We will enjoy a delicious, traditional, lunch at Taveners Farm. Learn about the cooking traditions that came from the Tahitian foremothers and ancestors of old. Lou Tavener is a renowned Island cook who’ll provide us with a scrumptious lunch. We also get to hear about the Norf’k Language; what it is and how the Islanders are working to preserve it. Lou is a Norfolk Islander with many years working in the provision of Norf’k langwig stories, plays, songs and games for the school & online as well as in plays & events for the community. Late afternoon we will be collected and transferred to this evening’s Island Fish Fry. Enjoy the stunning cliff top scenery and feast of Island dishes, along with local entertainment and the sunset.
Day 7
Norfolk Island (B,D)
Enjoy breakfast before we are collected for the Over the Cattlestops tour to explore the heart and soul of Norfolk Island on a captivating day tour, where we’ll discover the hidden gems of the local industries. Meet the skilled artisans and entrepreneurs behind the island’s thriving businesses as they showcase their unique crafts and specialties. From handcrafted pottery to locally made soft drinks, we will have the chance to taste and purchase some of the locally-made products. Along the way, we’ll stop at a stunning scenic spot for morning tea, where we can soak up the breathtaking natural beauty of the island. Early afternoon we will be transferred to the Bounty Folk Museum, a treasure chest of history, an Aladdin’s cave full of fantastic collections, excellent learning resources and inspiring information stretching back to 1788. The Bounty Folk Museum tells the strange and startling history of Norfolk Island, from the harrowing tales of ill-fated convicts brought here, to the against-the-odds survival of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives. Though small in size, the museum is wide in scope, with lots of artefacts to pore over. Discover Bounty memorabilia, early photographs of Pitcairn settlers, old weapons and some frankly quite terrifying antique medical instruments. Whilst doing time on Norfolk Island it’s only fitting that we have a Night as Convict Dinner. Tonight is sure to be a fun time as we dress* like convicts and join in with the Commandant for an evening of gaiety, feasting, singing & dancing. *convict outfit supplied.
Day 8
Norfolk Island – Brisbane (B)
After breakfast and check out we make a visit to Fletchers Mutiny Cyclorama, a continuous 360degree panoramic painting that tells the story of the mutiny on the Bounty. This will be followed by a stroll through Queen Victoria’s Garden after which you may choose to walk back into town or take the short bus ride back. Sadly our time in this remote paradise is coming to a close and upon returning to our accommodation we will need to meet in the transit lounge before we are transferred to the Norfolk Island airport to check in for our return flight to Brisbane.
